A Time for Many Thanks
November in Pismo Beach is festive, thankful, and generous. The trio of events highlighted below kick off the holiday season in grand fun and good karma. Whether you’re a Pismo Beach native or visitor, there are opportunities to be entertained while also finding ways to give back as you settle in with those you love on Turkey Day.
Have you ever envisioned the state of California as a tempting slice of sizzling, fresh bacon? The organizers of the SLO Bacon Fest have! And it is beautiful. During a month that culminates everything we’re thankful for, it’s only proper to celebrate one of America’s favorite foodstuffs: bacon.
Join in the bacon eating contest (the first person to eat three pounds of bacon wins) or try your hand at becoming the festival’s Bacon Queen, a title unlike any other. Tickets are on pre-sale now for $35 or $40 at the door. One ticket to the Bacon Fest (Saturday, November 23, 2013, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Madonna Inn Expo) gets you unlimited bacon and beverage samplings from local restaurants, breweries, and wineries. And, before your conscience starts telling you to pull back on the pork, remember proceeds from the event will go toward providing SLO County children with more nutrition through after-school meals.
A Thanksgiving Meal for Thousands
Whether you eat early or eat late on Thanksgiving Day, make part of your holiday about giving to others who aren’t as fortunate to be sitting down to a hot meal with family and friends at home.
The 30th Annual Pismo Beach Thanksgiving Dinner will take place at the Pismo Beach Veteran’s Hall from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Over 3,000 meals were served last year – which is more filling for your heart and soul than any amount of turkey and stuffing. To find out how you can participate, call Anita at 805.773.2208.
Don’t Let the Turkeys Get You Down
Some people have turkey bowls, but in Pismo Beach we have something to burn even more calories. The 2nd Annual South County Turkey Trot at the Beach will take place on Thursday, November 28, 2013, at Pismo Beach Pier. Line-up begins at 8:30 a.m. There’s a speed and a distance to suit everyone in this fun run for the whole family. The Turkey Trot includes a one-mile course (starting at 9:30 a.m.), a 5K, and a 10K (both of which begin at 9:15 a.m.). Walkers, joggers, adults, kids, and dogs on short leashes are welcome in all races.
In keeping with the holiday spirit, participants’ entry fees are a donation to the Food Bank – every dollar raised by the trot enables the food bank to purchase $10 worth of food for those in need.
