“Small Town-Big Race” – Running the San Luis Obispo Marathon
Gear up, runners! The San Luis Obispo Marathon and Half Marathon will be taking place April 25th-27th and is an event not to be missed by runners or spectators alike. The event was established in 2010 and offers one of the most beautiful race courses in the United States. The course itself tours the classic downtown San Luis Obispo and its historic neighborhoods then venture out into Edna Valley where you will take in views of the magnificent Morros, gorgeous farmland and pristine vineyards. Complete your race with a heart-pounding finale at the renowned Madonna Inn.
If the views are not enough, expect race day weather representative of a perfect California Central Coast spring. The morning is likely to begin in the low 50s and then anticipate the sunshine as temperatures rise into the mid-to-high 60s, perhaps even 70s.
The SLO Marathon has numerous races for the whole family to enjoy over the three day event including:
The Full Marathon on April 27th, a point-to-point course starting at San Luis Obispo High School and finishing at the famous Madonna Inn.
The Half Marathon on April 27th, a paved point-to-point course that follows the Marathon route, of course just a little shorter.
The Children’s Quarter Mile Dash on April 26th, starts near the tennis courts and ends at the official finish line of the marathon and half marathon. This race is for children 6 years and under, is sponsored by Central Coast Gymnastics Sports Center!
The Children’s Marathon Challenge on April 26th , a 1.2 mile run/walk that is part of an interactive online program that encourages children ages 7 to 14 to walk/run a progressive marathon over a 9-week period. This run is sponsored by San Luis Sourdough! Read more about this amazing program at Kids Running America.
Serious runners take note, both the marathon and half marathon courses are USATF certified with the marathon also being a Boston Qualifier.
Although the physical exercise is most rewarding, the SLO Marathon is about more than just the run. You will also see the best of San Luis Obispo’s community throughout the entire weekend. From gourmet restaurants and renowned wineries to art strolls, hiking adventures, surfing lessons, kayaking tours and golfing, there is fun for the whole family. Additionally, check out the SLO Marathon’s official post-race event entitled the “SLO Life Expo” which literally embraces what locals describe as the “SLO Life.” This event celebrates everything that makes San Luis Obispo so special.
