The Central Coast Live Theatre Experience
Live theatre is enjoyed by many and the Central Coast of California works hard to bring cultural, musical, professional, and community performances to the area. Large and small audiences each year are inspired and entertained by the many productions found among the local performing arts centers.
Let’s look at some of our favorite live theaters right in Pismo Beach’s backyard.
San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center
Established in September 1996, the San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center is located on the beautiful campus of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly). This modern facility has two main venues: the Christopher Cohan Center and the Alex & Faye Spanos Theatre. The included halls, pavilion and theatre are stunning and include capacities of 1,289, 180, 400, and 498.
This prestigious performing arts center is created through a genuine partnership between Cal Poly, the City of San Luis Obispo and the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center. Enjoy live theatre, comedies, family-friendly performances, dance, music, and more.
Upcoming performances include It’s Magic!, MET Live in HD: Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and GlobalFest on the Road: Creole Carnival.

San Luis Obispo Little Theatre
Enjoy professional productions that entertain, enrich, and educate as you experience one of the oldest continually running non-profit theatres in the nation. The San Luis Obispo Little Theatre’s mission is based “on the conviction that live theatre, performed and experienced in the full dimensionality of real time and space, is of inestimable value, reminding us of our shared human values in an increasingly digitized and impersonal world.”
Upcoming productions include True West, Oreos and Percodan, and Wit.

The Great American Melodrama & Vaudeville
You will not want to miss these family-friendly, audience-participation performances in Oceano. The musical comedies are complemented with dining at the in-house pub. Bring the whole family for food and joyful laughs!
Upcoming performances include A Dog’s Life and Across the River.
A Dog’s Life is a “hilarious, warmhearted new musical [that] chronicles the joys and challenges of dog ownership. But just who owns whom? When Joel adopts Jack at the shelter, he soon realizes that life will never be the same. Dog parks, trips to the vet, separation anxiety – it’s all here in a celebration of the inseparable bond between man and mutt. A Dog’s Life is a perfect musical for animal lovers and those waiting to fall in love, laughing all the way.”
Across The River “is a musical folktale based on one of America’s most-loved novels. Huckleberry Finn helps his friend Jim escape slavery, and the two outcasts find themselves fleeing down the mighty Mississippi. Soon the unlikely pair are dodging bullets, finding treasure, and outsmarting conmen. You’ll cheer along the way as Huck finds his own moral compass and learns the difference between right and wrong. The whole family will enjoy this timeless tale of friendship.”
