wine waves & beyondMark your calendars for April 27th – May 1st, 2016 as Wine, Waves & Beyond is back with its 7th Annual Central Coast Surf Classic. A 5-day event dedicated to more than wine and surfing – it celebrates the best that San Luis Obispo County has to offer. Enjoy the charm of our laidback beach town that embraces a classic California surf culture and experience Central Coast wines, artisan brews, local cuisine and great music, all while supporting our local community.

Can’t miss events

April 27th launches the wine and waves experience with a Surf Movie Night at the historic Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo. Expect an evening filled with “community, culture and surfing,” plus beer and wine will be available for purchase.

April 29th is Rabobank’s Barrel to Barrel event where live music, over 40 wineries and breweries, local cuisine, and a silent auction will entertain you for the evening.

April 30th includes a special winemaker’s dinner where chefs from around the country will pair delicious local wines with their most delicately-crafted courses.

May 1st is a fun-filled day with the Central Coast Surf Classic, 805 Classic and the Vintage VW Display. The surf contest takes place at the Pismo Beach Pier. Heats are available for men, women, challenged athletes and local winemakers/brew masters (a fan favorite). The remainder of the day is filled with classic VW’s, live music, food, and featured beers from Firestone Walker Brewing Company.

More than fun: who benefits?

The Wine, Waves & Beyond event has raised $130,000 for local nonprofits over the last six years. This year, proceeds will benefit GleanSLO and Still Frothy.

GleanSLO’s mission is “rescuing nature’s bounty for the benefit of [SLO’s] community.” They harvest and share food to nourish the local public and create a real appreciation for food and community relationships. Take a look at GleanSLO’s four core values:

Healthy food for all – we live in an area of agricultural abundance, yet there are many people in SLO County who go hungry. We believe in simple solutions such as harvesting extra produce and getting it to our neighbors in need.

Reduce waste – growing food requires resources such as water, land, labor, and energy. By gleaning we more fully utilize our region’s resources.

Gleaning grows communities – we create opportunities for a diverse array of people to collaborate and celebrate the act of harvesting and sharing nutritious food. By working together and sharing ideas, we discover our broader sense of connectedness and common purpose.

Knowledge empowers – we believe that through collaborations and sharing ideas we can inspire a healthier food culture.

Still Frothy hosts surf contests that help local youth and junior lifeguard programs. Pismo Beach’s Still Frothy Surf Festival takes place in September and is an annual contest designed to motivate kids to get outside and surf. It is a free competition for kids 17 and under including youth divisions, a junior guard challenge and the only tow-in (jet ski assist) air show on the Central Coast.
