For the third year, the surf and wine event Wine, Waves, and Beyond hits Pismo Beach May 31 through June 4, with all proceeds going to support the Association of Amputee Surfers (AmpSurf).

In the past two years, Wine, Waves, and Beyond has raised $26,000 for AmpSurf, a non-profit organization that educates and rehabilitates people with disabilities. One in five Americans struggle with a lifelong disability, from veterans to cancer survivors to children of autism – through adaptive surfing and the healing power of the ocean, this unique program aims to be both mentally and physically rejuvenating.

And there’s no better place than Pismo Beach to hold this primo event to raise funds for this incredible cause. The Central Coast is backdrop and foreground to a surf movie night, brew masters dinner, longboard surf contest, and VW display, which bookend the Barrel to Barrel event being held at the Cliffs Resort on Friday night, featuring a wine and beer tasting, food, live music, silent auction, and a swimwear fashion show.

Through name changes, new buildings, and renovations, what would become today’s Pismo Beach SeaCrest Oceanfront Hotel has maintained its elemental beauty and charm, captured since the beginning.

Humble Beginnings

The SeaCrest Motel was built in the early 1960s; the original owner was Henry Meyers Sr. The SeaCrest was truly the first Pismo Beach motel, setting the tone and style for other area motels, hotels and resorts to come. As palm trees jutted through the breezeway dividing the crescent shaped building, the hotel’s inception was humble but elegant.

The Salad Days

Scenery was the star, the swooping lawns led to the pool, shuffleboard courts, and the grand Pacific Ocean, with the iconic Pismo Pier jutting out nearby in the background. A local pastor, Barney Northcote, purchased the hotel in the 1970s. Mr. Northcote envisioned more of a complete destination for families to experience the Central Coast. He broke ground on the two new towers in 1980, and completed them in 1982, along with the north and south spas and other cosmetic upgrades.
