Pismo Beach California Pier Fishing Is Off the Hook

pismo beach pier fishingRod and reel enthusiasts and casual fisher folk alike will be more than satisfied when they follow the tide to the perch, flounder, sole, halibut, and shark population in the waters lapping against the famous Pismo Beach Pier. The calming tides and stunning vistas of this temperate, sunny California area make Pismo Beach Pier fishing an in-demand slice of leisure.

The Bait: One of California’s Popular Pier Fishing Destinations

An estimated 1.5 million people visit the Pismo Pier annually – it’s the most heavily fished and second-most-productive of the Central Coast piers.

PierFishing.com features information and fishing tips about the aquatic life that meanders in the waters of Pismo Beach, so you’ll know what you’re up against before you bait that hook. Learn about the schooling species in the summer catch, the fickleness of the boccaccio, your best bets for bait, and the perfect time to lure in perch.

Pismo Beach Pier is also a popular destination for the time-honored tradition of nighttime shark fishing. Depending on weather conditions and the tide, the “regulars” – sand sharks, leopard sharks, thresher sharks, and bat rays – typically make an appearance at the pier after twilight.

The Line: Historic Pismo Beach Pier Is a Keeper

Today’s Pismo Beach Pier is the first pier that anglers encounter when heading north through Central California. At 1,600 feet long and 27 feet above the low water mark, the pier originally cost just under $15,000 to build in 1881. (Compare this to the more than $1 million spent to restore the pier in the 1980s.)

When Southern Pacific Railroad built a line from San Luis Obispo to Ellwood in the late 1800s, massive numbers of tourists found their way to Pismo Beach, making it a must-see destination. Pismo Beach hotels appeared in record numbers and thrived as they handled the influx of visitors.

The “Reel” Deal: Where to Stay When Fishing at Pismo Beach Pier

Tourists and locals alike are drawn to Pismo Beach Pier for good fishing and a respite from the summer heat, a tradition that began in 1895 and to this daythe Pismo Beach area is very crowded during the summer months.

Whether you plan to visit during tourist season or fish with the local anglers in the off-season, make your reservations with the Pismo Beach SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel now to ensure that you’ll be privy to ocean views, direct beach access, and the amenities that only the finest Central Coast accommodations can offer.

Plan Your Adventurous Pismo Beach ATV Vacation

pismo beach atv vacationWhat could be even more exhilarating than riding an ATV through the wilderness or down a deserted country lane? How about your own sand and dunes off-road playground in Pismo Beach? The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA), formerly the Pismo Dunes SVRA, draws ATV enthusiasts from all over the country. For good reason!

The Oceano Dunes’ handsome natural architecture has been shaped by the strength of the Pacific Ocean currents and the power of the winds to create a majestic seascape for the avid ATV rider and neophyte off-roader alike. The Oceano Dunes are recognized as California’s finest and most extensive coastal dunes, offering ATV riders a terrain of wave-like crests traversing north-south, gentle slopes heading west, and steep inclines running east.

ATV aficionados trek to Pismo Beach, set up camp at the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel, and tackle this geologically unique sand dune complex on their ATVs, taking time to swim, surf, camp, hike, or surf fish as well during their visit to the Central Coast. Whether by foot or ATV, true explorers also appreciate the Oceano Dunes for its plentiful varieties of animal and plant life.

The Pismo Beach area year-round temperature ranges from 66 to 84 degrees. With an average 315 days of sunshine annually and 23 miles of coastline to devour, there are plentiful opportunities to explore on an ATV, by foot, or in the water. Travelers migrate to the coast from near and far, bringing their own off-highway vehicles or renting from one of the many local area ATV rental companies.

At the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel, we’re proud to be a popular Pismo Beach hotel choice for ATV enthusiasts, situated just minutes from the Oceano Dunes, offering direct beach access via a five-acre oceanfront bluff. And when you’re not “surfing” the dunes, your retro-chic accommodations are equipped with the most modern services, including free WiFi Internet, a complimentary continental breakfast, and even fresh baked cookies. Hotel guests take a short walk to Pismo’s Restaurant Row and Pier Shops, for a refreshing recharge after an exciting day of ATV riding on the Oceano Dunes.

Planning a San Luis Obispo Wine Tour

san luis obispo wine tourYour San Luis Obispo Wine Tour will not be complete without a visit to the south side of the County in the designated American Viticultural Areas of Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Located within minutes of Pismo Beach, these areas are deserving of the worldwide recognition they have garnered for exceptional quality wine grapes, scenic vineyards and wineries.

Whether planning a San Luis Obispo wine tour for an intimate couple’s weekend or for an entire group, you’ll find plenty of ways to create a memorable experience in this ideal region.

Here are a few tips to help you plan your San Luis Obispo Wine Tour:

san luis obispo wine region map

1. Stay Central

Whether you head to San Luis Obispo County for a night or a few days, be sure to stay some place central to the wineries you wish to visit.  In the South County, Pismo Beach makes the perfect central destination for the world-class EdnaValley and Arroyo Grande Valley wineries.  And, if we do say so ourselves, the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel is a favorite among Pismo Beach hotels, offering ideal accommodations for travelers who enjoy the best of wine and waves.

2. Professional or Self-Guided?

When planning your wine tour, decide if you want a professional driver and guide or if you wish to drive and guide yourself.  There are several considerations here, but the most important is safety.  Never drink and drive! If you can’t appoint a designated driver in your group then it makes sense to hire a professional.

Another consideration is familiarity with the wineries and local area. A professional tour guide will be able to recommend wineries based on your tastes and what you’re seeking in a wine tour experience. Interested in visiting a small family-owned winery specializing in Chardonnay? Or do you prefer a larger, more established winery? Do you want to relax awhile at each winery and enjoy the views or see and taste as much as possible within your given timeframe?  A professional guide can help make your vision a reality.

We are happy to recommend this great local wine tour company: Breakaway Tours.  Give them a call and tell them the SeaCrest sent you!

3. Package it Up!

Here’s an easy and affordable way to enjoy the wineries of South San Luis Obispo County.  Take advantage of our Uncork the Edna Valley Wine Tour Package. You’ll travel the back country roads and discover the hidden local favorites of San Luis Obispo County’s wine country. We’ve teamed up with Breakaway Tours to give you more than just ‘something to do’, with knowledgeable and fun wine tour guides.

Our San Luis Obispo wine tour package for 2 people includes:

  • A one night stay in an OceanView King or CoastalView 2 Queen guestroom.
  • Transportation to and from the SeaCrest.
  • Tasting at 4 unique wineries in the Edna Valley wine country.

Enjoy all of this for just $319 for 2 people.

Finding a Dog-Friendly Hotel in Pismo Beach

dog friendly hotel pismo beachYour dog is more than a pet; he’s part of your family. So when it’s time to plan your vacation, a dog- friendly hotel in Pismo Beach is just what you need. And don’t think you have to skimp on the quality of hotels to find a place that will accommodate Fido. Today’s dog-friendly hotels go above and beyond, to make your vacation a great one for you and your dog.

So what can you expect to find? Well, we think there are a few standards you should look for – after all, you don’t wish to include your dog at the expense of your own comfort.

Plenty of space for your dog to roam

It can be frustrating to stay in a hotel with your dog, only to realize you have to get in the car and drive to the nearest park just give Fido a place to stretch. Ideally, you’d love to have grassy spaces – or – even better yet – a beach that permits dogs.

Dog-friendly rooms

Another common frustration with “pet-friendly” hotels is you may be limited on room choice – for example, only one-size bed, or you may be placed in a room far from amenities you wish to enjoy. Make sure the hotel offers you a range of room types, and your room is located with easy access to the outdoors and amenities.

Added luxuries for Fido

With all the packing (particularly if you have children!) that vacations require, it can be easy to overlook your dog’s necessities, such as extra food or treats. And what about dog bowls or a dog bed? Will you even have room in your car to accommodate everything you want to bring? Fortunately, inPismoBeach, there’s a dog-friendly hotel that not only offers food, dog toys, gourmet dog biscuits, bowls, and beds, but even a Canine Concierge who gives tips on where to take your pet and advises pet-friendly activities.

The Pismo Beach SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel is Your Vacation-Friendly, Dog-Friendly Choice

At SeaCrest, we love dogs and we know they’re truly a part of your family. The ideal vacation for you includes the ability to bring your dog, and stay in a comfortable, ideally located hotel, offering amenities for both your family and your dog.

We are pleased to offer plenty of grassy space, designated to accommodate dogs, in addition to pet-friendly rooms featuring a double queen or king, and, our favorite feature – a Canine Concierge service. We’ll give you a welcome brochure that lists pet-friendly activities, and treat your dog to gourmet dog biscuits. We also offer pet beds, extra food, and water bowls.

We can’t wait to have you and your dog as our guest. Check out our Best Doggone Vacation Package for your next visit toPismoBeach.

SeaCrest and Pismo Beach: 50 Years Together

SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel Pismo Beach

This marks a monumental year for our Pismo Beach hotel. As we reflect back on 50 years of service and hospitality, we’d like to share with you the SeaCrest story…

The Original Jewel of Pismo Beach

All those years ago, the SeaCrest Motel was known as “A bit of Hawaii on the California Coast,” and the tagline stuck. Resting on a sun-kissed crescent on the bluffs facing the Pacific Ocean, the property and its hotel have been a cherished part of Pismo Beach for more than 50 years.

Through name changes, new buildings, and renovations, what would become today’s Pismo Beach SeaCrest Oceanfront Hotel has maintained its elemental beauty and charm, captured since the beginning.

Humble Beginnings

1960s classic pismo beach postcard

The SeaCrest Motel was built in the early 1960s; the original owner was Henry Meyers Sr. The SeaCrest was truly the first Pismo Beach motel, setting the tone and style for other area motels, hotels and resorts to come. As palm trees jutted through the breezeway dividing the crescent shaped building, the hotel’s inception was humble but elegant.

The Salad Days

Scenery was the star, the swooping lawns led to the pool, shuffleboard courts, and the grand Pacific Ocean, with the iconic Pismo Pier jutting out nearby in the background. A local pastor, Barney Northcote, purchased the hotel in the 1970s. Mr. Northcote envisioned more of a complete destination for families to experience the Central Coast. He broke ground on the two new towers in 1980, and completed them in 1982, along with the north and south spas and other cosmetic upgrades.

Mr. Northcote presided over a busy, happy time at the hotel, promoting an atmosphere that attracted mostly families and religious groups, nearly all of whom had been coming since the hotel was founded. After he passed away, his daughter Nancy Northcote guided the resort with that “original 1960s Pismo Beach style” through busier times, with ever more groups and families making SeaCrest their own tradition.

Serious Improvements

Pismo Beach Hotel SeaCrest           pismo beach hotel seacrest

The Northcote Family sold the hotel to the current owners who changed the name to SeaCrest Resort, and put the entire property under renovation. The décor morphed to a retro-modern style, many luxurious appointments and amenities were added, such as microwave, refrigerator, Keurig Coffee maker, iPod docking station, flat-panel HDTV with DirectTV and WiFi access, just to name a few. The whole crescent received a well-planned upgrade resulting in a transformation that has brought great joy to our long-time guests and those experiencing the hotel for the first time.
