Dads are notoriously hard to buy for… but they’re not hard to please. Any red-blooded man can appreciate the allure of the Classic at Pismo Beach Car Show. Held annually on Father’s Day weekend in Pismo Beach, the 28th celebration of this event will take place on June 14 – 16, 2013. A day at the car show is a perfect way to say, “Happy Father’s Day!”

Rev Your Engines in Pismo Beach

One of the largest spectator car events in California, and one of the most respected and well-known shows nationwide, the Classic at Pismo Beach Car Show draws over 175,000 car enthusiasts and curious guests to downtown Pismo Beach and the famous Pismo Pier.

More than 1,000 show vehicles are on display at this free event, which highlights cars of all makes, models, and years. Some of these machines are the likes of what you believe you can only see on television or in movies – from roadsters to pick-ups, muscle cars to street rods, this is the place to see them in all their shining glory.

Deliciously Classic Car Show and Then Some

The Classic at Pismo Beach Car Show isn’t all about engines and chrome, however. There’s a diversion to suit every attendee. Over 130 vendors of all types and treasures will be on display at the car show. Some visitors may want to indulge in some shopping in downtown Pismo while the car aficionados lose themselves among the engines and hubcaps.

Looking for refreshment? Quench your thirst, and quell your gambling bug, by taking part in the Classic’s Poker Run self-guided wine tour. Stop in at the many wineries surrounding Pismo Beach to collect your hand and compete to win a cash prize. Don’t forget to stop by the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach along the way. We are a poker run participant as a bonus card stop!

The Thursday night Gala Event will take place at the Hot Rod Bar & Grill Tent near the Pier Lot. This fundraiser will feature the tasty eats of local Pismo restaurants, such as Splash Café, Marie Callender’s, Chele’s Food & Spirits, and Chipwrecked, and includes a charity auction and fashion show. The Surf & Turf Gourmet Dinner is available Friday or Saturday night and spotlights lobster, steak, and all the trimmings, plus live entertainment.

Car Show Pre-Party at the SeaCrest

Pismo Beach visitors who are headed to the Central Coast especially for the Classic at Pismo Beach Car Show are encouraged to come early to take part in the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel’s own pre-car show Car Show being held Thursday, June 13, 2013, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the SeaCrest parking lot. Over 50 classic cars, music, food, wine and beer tastings, raffle prizes, and classic car awards make this a pre-party you won’t want to miss! Attendance is open to all SeaCrest guests and the community for free. After all the fuss and revving of engines has died down, you can enjoy the relaxing and comfortable environment of a room at the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach, with unparalleled views and direct beach access.

Pismo Beach never has a shortage of things to do, especially in Summer. May and June are two of our favorite months for Central Coast events and celebrations.

Wine and Surf for a Good Cause

It’s that time of year again! Wine, Waves, and Beyond is the classic surf and wine event that celebrates San Luis Obispo wine country and the unique Pismo Beach surf culture. The events – surf contests, movie night, scrumptious dinners, wine and beer tastings, a VW display, live music, and more – take place at various venues throughout the county and all proceeds support the Association of Amputee Surfers (AmpSurf), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and rehabilitating individuals with disabilities through the healing power of the ocean.

Life’s a Breeze at Dinosaur Caves

Pacific Breeze Concerts at Dinosaur Caves Park are a family affair with free music and activities from 1 to 4 p.m. Each concert will be held on a Sunday: June 9, Big Daddy’s Blues Band; July 14, Sean Wiggins and I0ne g0at; and August 11, JD Project. Dinosaur Caves is also known for offering visitors some fun elements of the prehistoric era, including climb-worthy giant dinosaur eggs (perfect for photo ops), not to mention an utterly amazing oceanfront blufftop view.

Fine Art in the Summer

Also located at Dinosaur Caves Park in Shell Beach is the beloved Art in the Park series, held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first Sunday of every month from May through November. Over 100 of the finest Pismo Beach artisans display their amazing work – from sculpture to glasswork, jewelry to textiles, paintings to furniture – and there is a little something for everyone in your crew, including music and children’s activities.

Have a Barrel of Fun in Pismo Beach

Roll Out the Barrels is a summer tradition in San Luis Obispo County, setting the tone for a season all about good vibes, great wines, and happy people. This is the 23rd year for this signature event and it runs from Thursday, June 20th, through Sunday, June 23rd. It all begins with a grand tasting on Thursday evening during which SLO Wine Country wines will be paired with scrumptious morsels prepared by local chefs. Friday night is a showcase of winemaker’s dinners, with area restaurants and wineries teaming up. The weekend includes a two-day passport to over 20 wineries, also offering wine and food pairings as well as live entertainment, exclusive specials, and more.

There are always plenty of festivities to attend on Memorial Day weekend, but folks in the know opt to be in the historic Village of Arroyo Grande, just down the road from Pismo Beach, for the annual Strawberry Festival. Thousands of visitors make their way to Pismo Beach’s neighboring town to participate in or simply attend this merry festival.

A Berrylicious Weekend in Pismo Beach

Chocolate-covered strawberry skewer anyone? Yes, please! If you were looking for an excuse to indulge in one of the finest fruits, look no further. Held on May 25 and 26, the Arroyo Grande Strawberry Festival is one of California’s largest festivals, a family-style event that draws in locals and visitors alike. 2013 marks the 30th year for this special event – and the berry harvest is like no other!

Over 60 food booths lined Olohan Alley last year, so you can easily enjoy three square meals – including the Strawberry Pancake Breakfast – but don’t neglect to leave plenty of room for delectable, must-taste strawberry delicacies, from shortcakes to funnel cakes, milkshakes to berries by the box.

Berry Sweet Treats for Kids and Adults

From jugglers to rock climbing towers, rides to bouncy houses, the Strawberry Festival’s Kiddie Carnival gives young attendees plenty of rides and games to keep them happy from morning to evening. And every festival goer will find tunes to suit their tastes with live entertainment including a mix of ethnic, folk, blues, jazz, and contemporary music, along with some good old rock ‘n’ roll.

There is no shortage of every kind of strawberry at the festival, from real to artistic – and, as a juried show, every vendor has earned its place among the masses. Don’t miss the Strawberry Cook-Off Contest, the Arts & Crafts Show, and the Strawberry Shortcake and T-shirt booths. And, of course, what would a strawberry festival be without a Strawberry Blonde Contest and a Strawberry Prince & Princess Contest?

Run for Your Strawberries

You expect wine country to be known for some grape stomping, but strawberries? The Strawberry Stampede, held in conjunction with the Arroyo Grande Strawberry Festival, is a 5K run, 10K run, and 5K walk on Memorial Day, Sunday, May 26, 2013. Race day Registration on corner of Short Street & Nelson opens at 6:45am.

The race is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pismo Beach. All of the money raised by the Strawberry Stampede is put back into the local community in support of youth causes. There’s no better reason to run! (Plus, you can work off those strawberry sweets you inhaled – and have a good excuse to enjoy some more!)

Sweet Dreams in Pismo Beach

If you’re making your way to the Central Coast for this premiere festival, make your reservations at the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach now because the Strawberry Festival draws a crowd! Many of our guests find other reasons to come early and stay later than just the Memorial Day weekend. With so much to do in Pismo Beach and on the Central Coast, those delicious berries are just the tip of the iceberg. Dig into everything our area has to offer – from fruit to wine, sand to surf.

Mother, godmother, grandmother, aunt, friend… Mother’s Day is the time to celebrate the women who personify the role of mother. While a mama’s job is far from simple, honoring mom is easy, especially when you’re in Pismo Beach. So put a few of these to-dos on your itinerary for May 12, 2013, and mom will be truly impressed.

Outdoor Entertainment in Pismo Beach

Moms are known for ordering their kids to, “Go outside and play!” Get some fresh air as a family with a scenic walk down Pismo Beach and the Pismo Pier. Or opt for a leisurely stroll on the Bob Jones Trail, working your way toward Avila Beach. Walk, run, bike, or blade it and stop at the quaint trail-side restaurant along the way for a snack and some vino.

How many times did mom sing you to sleep or sing away a boo-boo? Now it’s her turn. Budget a little time into the day to catch the first act of the Pacific Breeze free concert series at Dinosaur Caves when the Damon Castillo Band performs on Mother’s Day from 1 to 4 p.m.

Anything But Home Cooking

Nothing pays homage to mom quite like a delicious meal – so book her for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or even just dessert at one of these tasty Pismo Beach restaurants:

A cute café with outdoor seating, The Honeymoon Café in Pismo Beach is known for its breakfast and brunch specialties, including orange zest French toast, huevos rancheros, and homemade jam. Weekends are crowded, so plan accordingly!

Mon Ami is a family-owned European Style Café and Espresso Bar in the heart of Pismo Beach. All the food at Mon Ami is made from scratch using original recipes, from Belgian waffles to paninis, crepes to real fruit smoothies. And don’t leave without indulging in an espresso or coffee, spiked with fine Ghirardelli syrups.

Its highly rated scenic view isn’t the only thing making Steamers of Pismo Beach a hot spot. Indulge in their special Mother’s Day Champagne Buffet from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (reservations highly recommended!) or schedule a lovely dinner out between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. for seafood, pasta, salads, steaks, or award-winning clam chowder.

The Avila Beach location of the Old Custom House makes it a fab breakfast and brunch spot – especially since they serve these leisurely meals on the weekend until 2 p.m. Dig into a giant Belgian waffle or create your own omelet. Order up a luscious breakfast dessert and consider it a new Mother’s Day tradition!

Cuvee Champagne Bar and Bistro is one of Avila Beach’s newest establishments. They’re offering a special Mother’s Day menu, but don’t be deceived by the name of this growing hot spot – kids are more than welcome and can check out the young customers menu while mom enjoys some well-deserved bubbly.

Looking for a low-key but special way to recreate childhood memories of ice cream runs on hot summer days? Treat mom with a trip to the Avila Valley Barn Ice Cream and Sweet Shoppe. Sixteen ice cream flavors, non-dairy sorbet, homemade fun, and homemade specialty candy – this is a place you just can’t miss.

Escape to Pismo Beach

No one ever said Mother’s Day only has to last one day. Make a long weekend of it at the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach. We’re offering an extra-special Mother’s Day Escape for deserving moms.

It’s that time of year again! Art in the Park at Dinosaur Caves Park in Pismo Beach begins in May and runs through November. Held the first Sunday of every month, this Pismo Beach tradition is anything but prehistoric.

Art in All Its Forms

The seventh season of Art in the Park is a gathering of the finest Pismo Beach offerings of art, music, and children’s activities, making it a more than worthwhile outing for the whole family. Over 100 artists and craftspeople will display their wares to be admired, coveted, and purchased.

Art in the Park is craftsmanship at its finest. Paintings, sculpture, pottery, glass art, textiles, jewelry, wood, and metal furniture are just some of the categories of amazing work that guests will encounter. The colors and atmosphere join to form a visual feast of creativity. From vases to clothing, wind chimes to woven baskets, you can’t help but be inspired by the likes of these fine artisans and their work.

Make Friends with the Dinosaurs

When it’s time to really stretch your legs and embrace the great wide open, explore Dinosaur Caves itself, an 11-acre oceanfront bluff top park. Bring the family pet, walk a while, jog off the sweets you indulged in (Art in the Park is also known for its delish BBQ and pastries), or break out the fishing tackle for a leisurely cast over the Pacific Ocean.

Dinosaur Caves is popular with photographers, professional and amateur. Those three teal, speckled, life-sized dinosaur eggs are irresistible to young people and adults alike and crouching there is just the spot to snap a one-of-a-kind picture.

If you can manage to pull yourself away from the eggs, the large play area also includes two concrete dolphins, Oreo the Orca Whale, the USS Imagination sailboat, a dinosaur, seals, a tire swing, and tot swing. That means plenty of diversions to go between and expend some energy.

Put On Your Walking Shoes

Dinosaur Caves is only a short one-mile walk from the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach. You won’t have to worry about driving and parking and you can treat yourself all you like because you’ll be getting in some wonderful exercise on your jaunt to and from Art in the Park. End your art-filled Sunday by relaxing on the rooftop terrace of the SeaCrest, or taking a leisurely walk down to the beach to daydream about your own newest endeavors – artistic, or otherwise.

On Thursday, May 16, the Amgen Tour of California bike race will ride through San Luis Obispo County and stop in Avila Beach. Sponsored by biotechnology pioneer Amgen, the Amgen Tour of California is America’s most successful annual cycling race, as well as one of the nation’s largest and most recognized annual sporting events. Consider it the United States’ equivalent of the Tour de France!

A California Bike Tour Like No Other

The Amgen Tour of California is an annual professional cycling race. A prestigious eight-day event, it features an elite collection of athletes and professional teams from across the globe who cycle their way across nearly 800 miles of scenic California highways and byways. The Amgen Tour is one of only two American races listed as a UCI 2.HC event on the international professional cycling calendar. World-ranking points are awarded to the top finishers.

The Amgen Tour was created in 2006 and is owned and produced by the California-based sports and entertainment presenter AEG Sports. AEG is committed to presenting the Amgen Tour as a free sporting event dedicated to promoting cycling, healthy living, and bicycle safety.

Celebrating California and More

The Amgen Tour will ride through numerous California cities and towns, and part of AEG’s commitment to their event is increasing tourism and economic development in the local communities they visit throughout the state. The Lifestyle Festival, held near the finish line of each stage of the tour, certainly aids in this goal. The place to be for all cycling enthusiasts, the Festival features cycling vendors, family activities, food, and entertainment for all ages.

Off the Well-Cycled Path

Whether you’re hitting the Pismo Beach area for the Amgen Tour or simply to soak up nature, rest assured pro cyclists don’t have the monopoly on biking on the Central Coast. The Bob Jones Bike Trail is a scenic paved path to Avila Beach. Hop on the route with your own two-wheeler, or rent a bike to get from point A to B. There’s even a market and deli on the trail, well-stocked with food, wine, and snacks – now that’s a perk no professional bicyclist gets to enjoy!

Whether you’re planning to be in Pismo Beach for the San Luis Obispo County leg of the Amgen Tour of California or otherwise, stay at the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach between May 13-17, and get 20 percent off your stay! Presented by the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce from April 26-28, the Taste of Pismo gathers together the Central Coast’s finest food, wine, music, and more, at the scenic Dinosaur Caves Park.

Better Than Home-Cooking

Kicking off this epic weekend celebration of foodstuffs and drink, “Farmfest on the Coast” brings together Central Coast farmers, winemakers, and chefs to showcase sustainability and locally grown, harvested, and handmade foods and vintages for unmatched farm-to-fork pairings.

This event highlights San Luis Obispo Wine Country while offering a platform to champion the hard work of local ranchers, farmers, and fisheries to present fresh, local produce. Those in attendance at Farmfest will know exactly where their food comes from – and literally be able to shake the hands that feed them.

Sample savory bites from twenty featured farmers, chefs, and restaurants, including Talley Farms, Splash Café, Rooster Creek, Tiber Canyon Ranch, Gardens of Avila, and Robbins Family Farms. Taste test pours from over 30 different Central Coast wineries, from Ancient Peaks to Zocker. Sustainable showcasing partners include Evo, Cal Poly Food and Wine Business, Central Coast Vineyard Team, Farm Supply, and more. Flapper-era jazz and French gypsy music provide the perfect backdrop.

The Tastiest Town on the Central Coast

The main event of Taste of Pismo takes place on Saturday, April 27, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Over 20 Pismo Beach restaurants and more than 20 wineries will be on display, offering up the tastes that have made Pismo Beach so famous for its food and drink.

This is the premier culinary and wine event of the Central Coast; locals flock to Taste of Pismo to support the eateries and vineyards they know and love, while visitors are lucky enough to be introduced to the finest flavors of Pismo Beach. It’s easy to hitch a ride to Taste of Pismo too – just hop on the beach trolley on Price Street and Shell Beach Road to get to and from this food-lover’s destination.

Eat, Sleep, Then Eat Some More

Wrap up the Taste of Pismo weekend with a delectable Sunday pancake breakfast and BBQ lunch, sponsored by the Pismo Beach Cities Lions Club with support from the local area Boy Scouts. The proceeds will benefit the revitalization of Camp Mabel French and the Joe Rose Memorial Center.

Whether you’re coming to Pismo Beach specifically for the Taste of Pismo, or whether you just happen to be in town for other pleasure or business, the SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel in Pismo Beach is your home away from home while you feast on the scrumptious and satisfying wares of our hometown. Hit all three days of events and feel no guilt in your indulgences – the direct beach access from the SeaCrest means you can get in enough strolls or jogs along the Pacific Ocean to keep your overindulgence guilt at a low and your appetite in fine form.

Kite-flying brings the Banks family together at the end of Mary Poppins. But when “kite” and “Pismo” are spoken in the same sentence, every extreme water sports enthusiast knows kiteboarding is the topic du jour.

Kiteboarding Thrill-seekers Unite in Pismo Beach

The Pismo Beach KiteXPO is the largest kiteboarding event in the United States and this year will take place on April 12-14. SUP and kite demos will take place all three days from 9am to 5pm on Pismo Beach. On April 13, there will be a Hawaiian-style BBQ courtesy of Maui Mike and the Lujan family, followed by a beach bonfire and music. Participating vendors include: Airush, Best, Liquid Force, Litewave Designs, RRD, Axis Kiteboarding, Mystic, DaKine, ASV Performance/Keyan Kiteboarding, and North.

Veterans and newbies alike can dip their toes into the kiteboarding pool and the opportunity to test all the newest kites and boards. There is an established trainer kite area for folks interested in getting into the sport and a pro-rider clinic in the works. A new event layout adds a buffer zone on either side of every two brands on display to allow for comfortable launching and landing room. Industry experts will also be on hand at the 11th Annual XtremeBigAir’s KiteXPO to offer the 411 on new technology and techniques, when it comes to this growing sport. Raffles and fundraisers are a popular part of the KiteXPO, enabling people to take a chance at winning custom kiteboards, wave kites, kitesurfing holidays, and more.

What’s In a Kiteboard

There’s nothing innocent or quaint about kiteboarding. Also known as kitesurfing, kiteboarding is an extreme sport; requiring riders to harness the power of the wind to control their kites as they propel them across the water. The controlled flying aspect is one of the sport’s biggest draws, and it’s when seasoned kiteboarders perform their boldest tricks and jumps.

This isn’t to say neophytes should keep their distance. Everyone has to start somewhere, even with kiteboarding. Kiteboards are similar to small surfboards or wakeboards and the sport itself is a conglomeration of surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, and paragliding. While kiteboarding may lure in people of a bold nature, every experienced kitesurfer knows that if you don’t conquer the sport, it will conquer you – and that means plenty of practice, care, and safety, in order to avoid injuries and still enjoy this adrenaline-boosting sport.

Give Your Sails a Rest

You’ll need a Pismo Beach hotel to park your kiteboard for the night after a day’s worth of air-catching and wave-surfing. The SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel has direct beach access so you can allow your gentler side to admire the ocean waves at night or indulge your predawn daredevil before you hit the KiteXPO again.
